I've got a 1996 150 hp Evinrude Ocean Pro. I tried to start it this morning, and the starter just whines - spinning free. Its not engaging the flywheel. The battery is fine. Do I need a new starter, or solenoid, or can I beat it with a big hammer?

Thanks.

Mine does this once in a while. Either you have crud in an electrical connection or your battery is not fully charged. My bet is on the battery. Check with a volt meter and a hydrometer.

Another possibility is that the bendix shaft on the starter needs to be cleaned and lubricated so that it will slide freely and engage the flywheel.

You may simply need to oil the drive where the gear rides up to ingage the flywheel.
You can turn it up by hand and see where to lube,
wd40 may work for awhile.I prefer something that
stays just a little wetter.

My bet is the bendix shaft - thanks for the advice, I'm going to give it a try.

Took out the Bendix shaft, cleaned and lubed. That did it. Thanks to all for your help.
