i have a 1962 40hp evinrude lark IV
model # 35932L
i have to choke it quite a bit to get it started.
once i get it started it will only stay running if i give some throttle. as soon as i lower the rpm to put it in gear, it stalls out. also when it is running it sounds like there is a miss. the sound i hear seems to be coming out the front of the carb. does anybody have any suggestions. i would greatly appreciate anybodies input. i don't know to much about marine engines. i mostly work on atvs and snowmobiles.

Re: won't idle

'evenin' James,

welcome to iboats.
there's a lot of ground to cover here so let's get started.
i'm not intimately aquainted with this motor (other here are), but if memory serves, this is a 2-cylinder?

Have you had the motor for a while or is it recent/new to you?

from your description, it sounds like a lean/carb issue but lets make sure we've got our "ducks-in-a-row" before we go chasing our tails

First, #1, check the compression. both(all) cylinders should read 100psi or better (but i've seen good runners read cold compression down to 70psi) and more importantly, they should read within 10% of each other. If not within 10%, let us know and we'll go from there

2nd. have you got good spark on both/all plugs? should be strong blue spark. if not good spark, let us know. These motors are a "peach" to tune.

3rd and likely the source of your problem. Remove (repeat-Remove) and clean/service carb. Get a carb kit, then thouroughly clean and service carb.

Report back with your compression test results first. IF,... there is a problem, you'll need to decide if the motor is worth (to you) fixing.

Here are a couple of links that may prove interesting:
http://www.precisionserv.com/Outboards/Revitalization.htm
http://maxrules.com/fixtuneitup.html

If you're serious about fixin'-up the ol' gal, you ought to get a service manual. of the after-market manuals, i prefer the Seloc over the Clymer but either will suffice. you can order one here at iboats. there is a link at the lower left-hand corner of this page.

let us know what you find

Good Luck
(& most important)
HAVE FUN!

Re: won't idle

i rebuilt my carbs yesterday and my motor runs great, i'll probably try it out tommorow, the 22nd.
the only thing that bothers me is when i took one of my spark plugs out the sleeve it screws onto came out with it. do u think that could cause any problems, besides the fact that sooner or later i will have to change my plugs? and back to one of your questions i forgot to answer, yes this motor is new to me. this is the first boat i have ever really owned. i got it sept. 02 for a siding job that i did. this is the first time it has run right sense then. again i thank u for your advice.
its nice to that there are people out there that will help without expecting anything in return. thanks,

james
