Getting boat to point it's ready for our maiden voyage and wondering whether I should leave things alone or check them out to avoid future problems.

1967 Evinrude 60 HP V4 came with boat. Previous owner says not run for 2 years +. I test ran in tank for several spells of 10-15 minutes and a lot of stops and starts and runs OK but idle seems high (maybe different in sea with more backpressure on exhaust?). Pumps water when thermostat opens. Runs smooth. Gears work.

Greased and oiled everything that can be, including gearcase which ain't leaking and old oil looked OK. Cleaned and set points. Cleaned fuel filter. I'm going to pull down and clean carby and fuel tank and lines. Also pull down starter motor as intermittent failure there. Will replace sparkplugs.

Should I pull down water pump and check impeller, gearcase, or anything else?

Hi Tinker
All the stuff you already did and slap a new wa
ter pump empeller in it and you should be ready. No reason to disassemble the gearcase or powerhead. Just take care of the service work.

wow tinkererer,

sounds like you've got a "handle" on it. 'bout the only thing i can think to add is check the plug wires. if they're old they are likly brittle and may be cracking. otherwise, twinxt what you've already covered & alcan's suggestion,...............HAVE FUN!
