I have a 4 hp evinrude outboard that will not start, because of firing. It came with the sailboat I bought in Feb. It started right up when I first got it and used it a cpl of times. I put the boat in for some bottom work and havent run the evinrude since march. Now it will not even fire. Fuel is getting to it but it want even turn over. Do not know the year serial# is Eooo2749, and model# is 46364. Please help stalled in Lake City!

You say

"Fuel is getting to it but it want even turn over. "

Does that mean that if you pull the rope it won't budge? That be bad unless it has a nuetral interlock and needs to be in nuetral and is not.

How do you know the fuel is getting to it? Are the plugs wet with gas when you checked them for spark?

Did they spark? Were they wet? While you have the plug(s) out checking the spark squirt a bit (teaspoon or so)of mixed gas in each cylinder and see if it fires off next try.

If it does you aren't choking it right, or it has some other fuel system maladay.

cunga,

The RIGHT way is to get a spark checker at the auto parts store, about $10.00.

The OTHER way  ;) is to remove a spark plug, plug it back into the boot and lean it up against the head. Pull the rope and see if it sparks.

Well I got new spark plugs and put them in, still would not fire so I took out the spark plugs loaded the holes with gas and it fired right up . But then it shut off no gas. Well took carberator off cleaned it and still doing the same thing out of luck guess here comes the ole outboard mechanic more bucks yuk!. Also what is it when oil runs out of the lower unit? (yes I had it in water when I was cranking it up)

It may just be unburned gas and oil making the little rainbows on the water that you think is the lower unit leaking. As all the exhaust gases run down the motor and out by the propeller.

If this motor hads the remote gas tank it may take a few squeezes of the bulb in the fuel line to start the fuel flowing into the motor. Then choke or prime and pull the rope. Then after it starts it should run without squeezing anymore.

Some of those motors had a choke that you pull all the way out, twist the grip to start position and pull the rope.

If it has the gas tank built into the motor, (or the reomote tank also for that matter) determine if it might have been possable for water to get into the fuel. That would mess things up for sure.

Some of the models had a thing that said prime or primer which I believe you pull on a few times before trying to start.

At any rate if after choking or priming well and repeated pulls of the rope it still won't run it will probably need a mechanic or you might be able to check out the fuel system with the help of a manual and a mechanical friend or two.
