Johnson Outboard Motor?

I have a Johnson outboard motor and dont know the year and have other questions. The model # is MO13M Serial # J2765602. When out on the river it acts like it shifts into neutral but I let up and it goes again. Sounds like the clutch is sliping but dont think there is one since it is direct drive. And the last time I had it in the water It ran for awhile and died and couldn't get it running until it cooled down. I know the impeller is getting bad cause took it apart and a couple of teeth were missing. It doesnt spray water out the back like it use to I took it apart and cleaned all the sand out and now it doesnt spray at all. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You very Much

Hey rad....

What you probably have is a model mQ-13m. This would be a 1967 9.5hp.

What's happening is your water pump impeller is totally shot and needs replace before going back on the water. Sounds like she just overheated and quit. You may also want to do a compression test on the cylinders before taking the engine back on the water to make sure you didn't suffer any cylinder damage from the overheat.

Thanks Jim and would that cause it to slip out of gear. I need to get a manual for it but I think it has been rebuilt before cause the guy said it is rated at a 15 horse now. Thanks again.

Howdy Rad.

Sounds like a spun prop hub. Get it rehubbed at a prop shop.

Good luck. :)

Re: Johnson Outboard Motor?

mornin' radracer,

outboardjim & JB have definately got you on the right track,.... to both of your questions.

as per the "15 horse" line. i think it is just that,... a line. this motor doesn't lend itself to that big of a kick in hp with a rebuild. even if he went .040 over on the pistons, i think you'ed be hard pressed to get an appriciable boost. i think it was about '73 when omc started making the 9.9 which was the same basic mtor as the 15 but with a smaller carb and some exhaust changes. this one would be more likly to fit the "15" bill, then your 9.5.

anyway, the ol' 9.5 is a dandy motor. i've got a '66 and love-er-2-pieces. take care of her and she'll take care of you.

Good Luck
HAVE FUN!

Thanks JB and Klondik 7 I figured it was a line and I love this motor it works awesome on my little 14ft flatbottom. Thanks for all the reply's. Guess it's time to take her out of the water and give it sum TLC. I would hate for anything to happen to it.
