60 horse johnson has no power while in gear

Motor raps out while in neutral, seems to have no problems, but when it is put into gear and throttled upped, it has no power, it will not get up on plane. It's a 60 horse johnson, model#rds-25d, serial# 2396336. What could possible be the problem???? Thanks for any info anyone may have. EHada

Howdy, EAHada.<br /><br />Your engine is a 1963 40hp, or that is what your model number says.<br /><br />Your engine is running on one cylinder.<br /><br />Go to www.outboardrepairs.com and look up power loss. Follow the advice there to find out which cylinder is dead and why.<br /><br />If you still need more help, reply to this post.<br /><br />Good luck.

JB,thanks for your advice.I checked compression first and had 100lbs. on each cly. then I put motor in tub of water to do a spark check. You were right, I did not have any spark on the bottom cly. I found out that I have a bad coil. Thanks again for all of your help. EHada<br />
