Working on a 9.5hp johnson, model mq-12a. How do I remove the brass(?) bushing and o-ring for the shift rod on the lower unit? The Seloc manual says to use a special tapered punch for this job. Can I get this punch at a hardware store and how do I apply it? Also which o-ring do I use from the 18-2682 kit I got? There are two that are about the same diameter, but one is fatter than the other.

Thanks in advance

Re: Removing bushing and o-ring from lower unit

I made a tool to punch out the bushings. It's basically a screw with the head ground down to just clearance the aluminum casting, but not the bushing (inside diameters are different). Insert the screw from the inside of the housing so that the threaded end of the screw sticks out the bushing. I then punch out the bushing with a long, narrow screwdriver in the slot on the screw.

Use the fat o-ring - it'll match up pretty closely with the one that comes out from under the bushing...
- Scott

Your friendly OMC dealer should have this tool. It will take about 10 seconds to pound out the bushing if you have the rest of the gearcase off and disassembled. It will take him about 20 seconds to install a new one IF you have the parts ready.
