Hopefully you didn't run it very long. You will at least need to change the water pump. Just cranking an engine without suppling water is sometimes enough to kill the impeller. Not to be rude but I would have a mechanic or someone that knows about outboards change the impeller. :p

What exhaust holes are you talking about. I don't know of any that you could make muffs fit over.

eek,

If your engine has a tell tale hole (water stream indicator) and a good stream is stll coming out of it, you're probably OK.

After i figured it out and put the muffs on in the correct spot, water seemed to flow out of the top engine hole, engine started and ran ok!
when i had it on the wrong way there was some smoking at the propeller which has me concerened!
thanks again
eek

eek,

When yyou say "top hole" I assume you mean the "telltale"??

THe smoking from the prop. wouldn't concern me. What would is the possibility that you warped the cylinder head. I don't know how long you ran it or how hot it got.

Run the engine again (properly hooked up) and let it warm up fully.

Then, let it cool down a while and remove the spark plugs. They SHOULD NOT look brand new. They will have a dark grey, possibly oily appearance to them.

If the look brand new, you are ingesting water into the comustion chamber(s)and a head gasket is probably the culprit. You may be able to get away with retorqueing the head. I would probably do that anyway.

eek,

You're probably OK-impeller anyway. Have a look at the plugs. If they are OK, just retorque the head.

By the time you read through these replys you could have removed the few botls holding the

shift linkage cover and connector,

lower unit to the mid section,

water pump cover, and had a look.

yepblaze,

You're right. However, I don't think this fella has a manual or is he comfortable doing that without one. I wouldn't be if I've never done it before.

Spoke to local Johnson dealer,he thought there was a 100% chance that i did some damage, but i think he thought the engine was running, when all we did was try to start it without water,it never ran but turned over,it did start and run after we had muffs on correct way!

With that being the case, that it had not even run, I would suspect that no damage had occured. Get it in a test tank, (garbage can) fire it up, and see if it's pumping.
