I'm on the verge of purchasing a 1999 ficht evinrude 150 and have gotten mixed reviews. Can anyone who owns one give some insight?

Howdy, Cutbait.

I haven't owned one. I wouldn't.

Son-in-law blew up a '98 150 and a '99 150. Hundreds of others, maybe thousands of others have, too. He now has a 2002 and it has been excellent so far.

Ficht V6s made before the Bombardier rework in 2002 were the worst engines OMC ever made, with the worst QC in OMC history.

There are some that have been flawless. Someone who has one of those will jump in here and tell you about it.

I wouldn't take the risk.

Re: 1999 ficht evinrude

I am a current owner of a 2000 FIcht 200 and is currently going under major overhaul. New pistons, one new rod, new main bearings. I personally would not attempt to go with the ficht unless it is a 2002 model or newer. I have only 250 hrs on this engine and the ring alignment pin went out. This seems to be a problem with ficht 2000 and under. It is my understanding that the ficht 150 and up are not the best motor to have. In my opinion, i would stay away, they are very expensive to fix and you need a mechanic that KNOWS what he is doing. Just my thoughts only.

Definately stay away from this motor. My father got the 150 right when it came out in 99 or 00 and in the thing spent more time being fixed than running. I know it had a major breakdown every year he had it usually costing a couple thousand. Dont set yourself up for misery.

Re: 1999 ficht evinrude

I own a 1999 200 Ficht that I purchased new and had the power head replaced in 2000 and other upgrades in 2001 The power trim unit went in 2005 which cost $1600.00. The ECU (Electronic Control Unit) just went and it cost $2,000.00 to replace, and I'm still trying to get the engine to run right. It has not run the same since the new ECM was programed by the factory and installed on my motor.
If I had it to do over again, I wouldn't touch this motor with a 10' pole, let alone invest $15,000 in a new one. A used evinrude Ficht, or a new Evinrude E-Tec are the last two engines in the world I would consider buying.
The only way I would consider it would be with a 10 year minimum unlimited warranty and you know that isn't going to happen.
