pardiville,

The only effective way is to take them apart, clean them out thoroughly and install new carb. kits.

You do not want a clogged carb. It can ruin a cylinder or two.

What lead you to believe the gas was bad?

Re: 115 Johnson Carbs full of bad gas WONT START

I recently bought this old 71 slickcraft and the tank was full of water. Very weak gas smell. So I siphoned most all I could get out of there, refilled w/ new gas and some heet & conditioner. Still no fire, just flooded out badly. So I went to a portable 6 gal. and finally got it to run for about 30 secs and died. I found out later that I had a kink in the line and it sucked the primer bulb flat. So thats where I,m at now, it is really not firing too good now and not even trying to start.
Thanks for the help guys!

pardiville, I have a 1973 Johnson 115 which I bought about six weeks ago. It had been sitting for a couple years abnd was hard to start. I installed a new fuel pump, plugs, rebuilt the carbs, a new power pack and all new fuel lines. Also I tested all circuits and connections. My engine now runs excellent and will push my 16' Sea Sprite tri-hull at 38 to 40 mph. If you have new gas going to your engine now, any old gas in the carbs should have pumped through the engine and out the exhaust. Sounds to me as if you need to rebuild those carbs. Very easy to do since the jets are fixed. There are two high speed and two low speed orifices on each carb which are prone to stop up with dirty gas.

Thanks fly I,m in East Troy can you come over and help me? LOL I,m really new to this. We had it out for 3 hrs using the portable tank and it really ate the gas. 6 gals. So I got the bright idea to try the big original tank and thats where I,m at. But it did run great we were flying all over the lake in my big 19 ft slickcraft. E mail is pardiville@milwpc.com . Thanks again Mike

pardiville,

I'm convinced you severely fouled the carbs.

thanks djohns,
I,m still trying to get up the courage to tear into it. I have a clymer manual and I pulled the fuel pump off today with no results. So next I will get the carbs out and hope for the best. The dealer I bought it from said I should pull off the carbs and just give them a good cleaning or otherwise he can look at it early next weekend. B ut I would like to get out there and ketch some fish this weekend. Thanks again Mike

Just keep trying to run it. Eventually youll get it to start. When you need pistons - call me. I'll make you a good deal.

Clean the carbs!!!!!!

And 50:1 does not mean gas to water ratio.......

pardi,

With a manual, the parts and a buddy. You can do the carbs in a couple of hours.

Just leave the beer alone until you're done. ;)

You can also get a gallon of carb dunk at your local parts store. I just paid 13 dollars for mine. let it sit for 20 minutes to overnight depending on whats in there. Very smelly stuff though. wear a hazmat suit using it lol.

Before you pay someone to look at it I would check your plugs, who knows what that bad gas did to them, also check to see if you are getting a good spark to them in the first place. I would also check the compression just to see what condition those cylinders are in after running bad gas through them, you can get a compression tester from any auto parts store or Sears.

Put in new plugs and check the fire is good, but it still isn,t trying to fire up. Once in a great while it will back fire alittle, thats about it. Even put in new gas lines and filter. Primer ball doesnt seem to be getting real hard after I pump it up. ???

Re: 115 Johnson Carbs full of bad gas WONT START

Good news the engine is firing really good now, I think I was flooding it out all along by lifting the lever to start it, cuz now that I,m leaving it near the bottom it is trying real hard to start. I have water muffs on it, but I,m wondering if it would be better to take it to the lake before I try it anymore? As you can tell I don,t have a clue. LOL Also I have over 5 ft of gas line on there to get the portable tank in a place were it will sit securely, is this too much because it seems the primer ball is getting as hard as it should? Thanks ahead guys :D
