Gas tank, quick connect leak

I bought a new Quicksilver fuel hose for my 71' 9.5 Johnson. It fits nice on the engine, but leaks at the tank fitting, when I prime it. I was using my neighbor's hose off his 9.9 and it fit much better at the tank. The tank is steel, with the Evinrude logo and barrel type fuel gauge. When I plug the hose into the tank it clicks in, but stands off about a 1/16, my neighbor's old hose fitting butts up tight and doesn't leak.
Anyone else run into this before?.

Thanx, Darrell

The connectors for Mercury (Quicksilver) are different from those for OMC's.

I think they never - especially not in the early 70's - meant to be compatible.

The marine store I bought it from, said that it was the right one for OMC. The package also states that?

?? Strange, then.

Do a close compare to the one that fits. Then you'll know if the tank-part is worn.

Might be a very small difference.

compare the hole in the end of the connector on your hose and your neighbors. if same size the rubber seal might be bad. as for the connector not going on all the way sounds like it might be the wrong one or a defective one. this happens. hope this helps

Hi Wind knot
You run the risk of a crummy fit, leaks, problems, anytime you buy after market fuel lines or fittings. Sometimes they fit sometimes they don't. I use these products anytime I can get away with it. Most of the time I have found it is less expencive and more depenable to bite the bullit and buy OEM. The thing that bugs me,is why can't the after market get it together with quality control.

Yeah well exactly, why say it fits OMC when it should read, "may fit OMC".

Well I went and bought a OMC coupler and cut the one off the new Quicksilver hose. It fits alot better but still doesn't seem like a perfect fit. I guess the only other thing to do is, put a new male fitting on the tank?. I wonder how these can be changed though, as it looks like it's all one piece, with the casting of the fuel gauge assembly?
