I recently purchased an 89 johnson 140 v4 looper after I threw a rod in my 120 force. The fuel in my tank has been sitting for about 2 months (30 gallons) also I boo boo'ed and mixed different oils the last time out. This might be why my old engine blew I dont know. Heres my qustion. After installing the new motor I fired it up it seems to be running rich and MASSIVE amounts of oil are spewing from the exhaust. Is this because of the old fuel?, or could this be something else, all cylinders are firing. Also does anyone know how dispose of 30 gallons of gas?

Before taking any drastic steps, try it first on a portable tank with fresh gas and the right mix. I wouldn't think two months is too long for the gas to sit and, if both oils were TCW3, shouldn't make any difference. But, if this clears it up, your only problem will be what to do with the old gas. Oh yeah, was this just on muffs or was the boat in the water and loaded up.

This was in the driveway. My main concern is the oil I mixed. I mixed walmart conventional with penzoil semi synthetic. What do you think?

Do these engines have a lot of problems associated with them? The VRO is disconnected and the mix is 50:1 It's just been sitting for a while and The oils are mixed. I'm going to run a a new clean mixture from a portable tank and see if thats it. If it still blows oil, what else could it be? :(

The only thing I'd be concerned about, and there may be nothing to it, is mixing the dino oil with the synthetic blend. Unless somebody knows different, I'd dump that fuel and start with fresh premix.

c/6

Hooty

Mixing those two oils should be OK but it wont hurt to start over and stick to Pennzoil. The V4 loopers are great motors. Someone may have been fooling around with the jetting on the one you bought. Have you ran it in the water or just in the driveway? What spark plugs? Make sure its running on all 4 at idle. Make sure the air box cover is ON!

Good luck!

Thanks for all the helpful info guys, it's greatly appreciated. I'm going to try a fresh premix today (thursday) and I'll let you know the results. Dhadley I havent ran it in the water yet, I'm still waiting for the controls to be delivered via UPS, but all 4 cyls. are firing and the air box cover is on. Another question, do these carbs (4 plastic ones) have an idle adjust? I dont see one.

They have fixed jets for idle - mid - and hi speed. The two air jets in the front of the carb are for idle (lower of the two) and mid range.

What spark plugs? Are the thermostats in?

Just a thought, was this the first time this motor has been fired up this season? All that oil in your exhaust could be fogging oil. Does it look like black oil mixed in with the water that exits the prop? Either way, like dhadly said, get some fresh fuel, stick with manufacturers oil. Also t-stats are very important. I believe the correct plugs for that motor are champion ql77jc4. Good luck with it!

I second the post about fogging oil. Also remember if the fuel has been sitting for 2 months the oil and gas have probably seperated. Start with a fresh portable or hook it up and tow it around a little while to mix the oil/gas.

Anybody know where the t-stats are located on this engine? I found what appear to be a pressure relief valves at the top of each head but no t-stats.

thanks

the tstats are behind the covers.
up to 1991 they used a water control valve . its attached to the throttle arm on block.
-
below 2000 rpm the water goes from exhaust housing threw water control valve to tstat diaphrams.
above 2000 rpm the water goes from tsats diaphrams threw water control valve to overboard drain.
