I have an old Evinrude (Serial # 7522-16146) which I believe is a 1957. I need to replace the lower housing and skeg. The shift control rod appears to be 1 piece, no bolts to disconnect it from the lever. Does anybody know if the power head needs to be completely disassembled to get at the shift control lever, or can it be removed safely by removing the bolts from the bottom? Clymer's Evinrude manual says to disassemble the whole power head. Any help??

Hi Ray....

Correct on the year and hp. Check the site below.

http://mitglied.lycos.de/old_omc/evinrude.html

Yes you do have to remove the power head to get at the shift rod nut. Simple though.

Disconnect the gas feed hose and remove any front covers that are on some of these motors so that the needles won't impede removal. Remove six power head attaching screws right below the engine pan and pull the head off. Easy.

Keep us posted and Good Luck!

Almost forgot...you will need another power head gasket to reinstall the power head...gettable from the dealer.

Outboard Jim (or others more knowledgable than myself), In reassembling the powerhead, there are a gasket, washer (spacer) and spring where the drive shaft enters the powerhead. No reference in Clymers manual regarding proper order or location.
Also, the new drive shaft O-Ring, no reference to proper location (the old one fell apart and out during dis-assembly) Any ideas? Thanks! Ray

There's a pin through the driveshaft near the top. After the pin comes (lu side to powerhead):

1) cup to hold spring?
2) spring
3) Carbon spacer thing (black)
4) O-ring
5) Washer (metal)
6) Gasket (cork?)

Then put the powerhead on. This is mentioned in a few places in the Seloc manual, for those who are counting..
