I would REALLY check into the wiring harness further. I spent $800 before I had the harness replaced and some wiring. I also may have ruined a pac (i'm assuming that it came to me bad) by shorting etc. I finally shotgunned it by replacing everything at once (I had the $$ at the time) and I'm sur it was the harness- connections) boat mech said it could have been blowing out other parts.

????

myles45 yes they dont show the v meter on the wiring schenatics because from what i can see it is used aftermarket for motors that came equipt with trim and tilt and dual battery switch what it does is prevent overcharge.however i did find it on the powerhead schemnatic assembly chart.my harness isnt in the best of shape and probably cxould use replacing but i ruled that out after the tests i preformed i seem to think it is down to the sensor cois wich are embedded in the timer base assembly and/or the stator.what i am wondering is being the voltage regulator is an add on for the 12 amp stator if it having that broken connection i spoke of earlier had something to do with the dfefectation of the stator or timer base assembly.maybe some of this information can be useful for someone else with similial problem i hope.

robb67,befor you start throwing parts at it,you should buy a multimeter for40$ andtest these parts first.the meter comes with directions for a vareity of tests ,it was one of the best moves I made.I asume you have a manual.oh did you check your grounds?

Re: EVINRUDE 140 1977 STILL NO FIRE

funny you say that myles i just ordered one i also ordered a neon tester wich i want to cancel now because i found out a dva peak tester cahn do the same i agree with you test first replace after yes i have manual i am just very persistant and have a hard time waiting i might tow it over to the ramp tomorrow and bring it somewhere monday not sure yet i have steps on how to test with neon tester i will have to look for multimetrer steps both stator and timer base sensor coils are 300. each regulator 146 pak 125 getting a bit expensive to be putting into a 77 always ran great though it doesnt owe me a thing next year brand new 200 evinrude later for this....

yes i tried that but also removed blk/yellow ignition wire from pak does the same thing but no spark ,,.im leaning towards sensor coils now getting fustrated

ok got my hands on some test equiptment bingo its the stator..my question is this what would cause a stator to go like that with no visable evidence im aware it is a 1977 but should i be replacing the rectifier as welli know they can wreak havock on a stator if bad..can i test a rectifier? thanx robb

I don't think anything is written in stone that sez ya gotta replace the rectifier if it ain't bad. They can be tested with an ohm meter though. I'm curious, did you test the stator with an ohm meter and it check out o-k? Some say the only way to test the stator is with the neon tester or with a peak voltage meter. I'd like to know if yours tested good or bad with the ohm meter.

Thx & c/6

Hooty

tested with a peak tester it was clearly bad how would i go about testing the rectifier does the motor have to be running?

No.
You test the retifier with it disconnected from everything else.
Did you check the stator with an ohm meter?

c/6

Hooty

no a buddy of mine had a peak dva tester a little more than just an ohm meter.but yes i heard that on the older ignitions s80 neon tester it the ticket but we didnt have one

i just replaced the stator on my 115 1979. i had some one help me who knew what they were doing one thing to make sure u do which i would have fogetten is to sand paper off the melted insulation (assuming there is some) under the flywheel the stator cost me $200 off the web and the power pack was $79 and the rectifier was $39. i figure that would have been $1,000 at the stealer, i mean dealer.

Re: EVINRUDE 140 1977 STILL NO FIRE

figured i would gine all my comrads an update on my situation,,,here it is after going to many marina/parts depo all insist that my 1977 evinrude 140 does not have nor need a voltage regulator i knew this wasnt true it wasnt on the electrical diagram but i found it on the powerhead assembly sheet granted it does look afytermarket the bracket looks cut by a torch but anyway it was made.on this motor it came stock with trim and tilt which than came with a 12 amp stator.now before this 12amps goes to the stock 6 amp rectifier to change ac to dc it has to be cut down to 6 amps and there is my voltage regulator.my problem was no fire. the only visable evidence i had was a broken wire off this voltage regulator which everybody was telling me was aftermarket and not needed.i tested everything found the stator was bad knowing a stator just dpoesnt go bad i knew it had to do with the vr.so the 12amp was going directly to the rtectifier without being regulated down to 6 amos wich blew it in turn everybody knows a bad rectifier not corrected can raise havvock with the stator.i cxhanged the voltage regulator, rectifier and stator 1/2 hourr job 5 but 5 days to figure all this out.all is well runs great parts $557.00 but now i can sleep.i posted this in hope it may help someone else with a similar problem save time.thank you very much hooty, crab and everybody else who gave me ideas and help.i love this forum and will be here to give back what i can thanx again Robbie

That is really good new i know how u felt i had a similar problem over 2 yr period i replaced thermostats, rebuilt carbas and finally figured it was stator rectifer and powerpak. anyway i know how it feels to get it going again. just the piece of mind that it is fixed makesme feel great. see u later
