I'm trying to understand prop logic in determining correct prop for my 17ft 83 Larson Mach I Runabout
I just installed a 95 150hp Johnson Oceanrunner with a 14 pitch prop. Boat is like a rocket out of the hole. Performance is real good, once I got used to triming adjustment. Motor was originally on a 23 ft Mako with same prop. Person I got the motor installed a newer 150 Oceanrunner on his boat but with a 17 pitch prop. Called me today and asked if I would mind swapping props as he claims performance on his is less than he had with the 14 pitch. My question is what will the 17 pitch do differently on my boat. I have a Tach on order as my original one was no good so I cant check RPM til its installed. I am hesitant to swap without getting a second opinion. Originally he told me 14 was the prop to go with on mine but now he feels 17 would be better. Who would make out with the better sinario is where I'm at..
Thanks for any feedback.

--------------------

Personally, I would wait until you install the tach before you make any decisions. Might want to avoid WOT until you're sure you aren't turning too many revs.

I'm thinking the same. Problem is that I wont have tach set up til the weekend. And he is wanting to stop by and do the swap tonight. I'm curious what generally speaking a larger pitch does. Better top end? more out of the hole etc? Once we do the swap if I have an issue I'm kind of outta luck. The 14 was on his boat before so I know it will work for what he wants to do. I could live with less pick up out of the hole and maybe more top end. I just dont want to get stuck chasin this guy

It depends on what you are going to use your boat for. If just fishing a 17 may work just slower on take off. If you are going to be pulling skiers and tubes I would stay with the 14 and see what RPMs are once you get a tach installed then decide. The 17 pitch prop will drop max RPM about 600 Rpm at WOT.
