We recently bought this motor and it wasn't running. My father got the motor to run (he replaced the spark plugs) but when we took it out on the lake it idles rough, and sometimes dies, but once you speed it up it smooths out and runs pretty good. Also, when you shift into reverse or forward the motor seems to bang hard. The model number is 60ESL70B. Can anybody give me any information on what may be causing this? Thanks in advance!

candikane

there are two things i can think of for the rough idle the spark plug timing is of or the engine isnt getting enough gas (clean the carburater)
and to prevent the banging while you shift dont shift at two high of an rpm (or a high idle) and dont shift slowly give it a quick pop into gear this will also prevent any wear and tear in the gearcase

Re: 1970 60 HP Johnson motor issues

It almost acts like it's getting too much gas, so I don't think there's a problem with not getting enough. I have read some things about the oil/lubricant in the lower unit, could this cause it? I know nothing about this at all.. as far as how to drain it or refill it. My family just got this boat about a week ago and we're thinking that the guy who owned it before us may have used a bad mixture of gas/oil.. could that cause it? My dad has been working on cars for a long time, but he doesn't know anything about boats, so we're a little lost. Any more help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! And thanks for the response merc :)

WomanInDistress ;)

I have the same motor with some of the same problems. The transmission is electric on this motor and I've been told can be troublesome. Make sure your running this motor with a big battery is another thing I've been told. Im about to rebuild carbs I think. Look at the "Pain in the arse" thread here.

The best single piece of advise in can give is get a repair manual for that engine. I think it requires a special type of gear lube (type C), the carburetor(s) probably need cleaning, rebuilding and then adjusting. You can get a generic shop manual here on iboats by clicking on the "Manuals" tab at the top or bottom of this page or go to Shop Manuals to get the factory manual.

g'luck & c/6

Hooty
