Hi all,

I have a 1979 100 HP Johnson Outboard that is having problems starting. The issue is that the starter will spin but won't engage, and once in a while out of the blue it will engage but won't turn the engine over. I have taken the starter off and cleaned all the contacts. I have also charged the battery, and it is holding a good charge. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas that I could try before purchasing a new starter??

Hey Ash...welcome to the forum.

Probably what's going on is your starter brushes need replaced and the commutator needs a cleaning. If your into mechanics, this should be no problem. Getting the brushes might be. I believe the brushes have been discontinued by Bomby. BUT....you may pick a set up from an after market place. (Check out NAPA. Sometimes you can get parts from them.) Or, check out iboats store for a replacement starter. If your not into mechanics, the replacement might be the way to go.

Is it just the bendix gear not popping up? Sometimes the gear that engages the flywheel sticks and all it needs is a shot of lube and a wiggle to free it up. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply, I will give this a shot!!, is there any chance this could be the Selonoid getting ready to go out??. Also just thought I would ask, The Bendix Gear does pop up sometimes, could you explain how this works, ie.... does the force of the starter rotating the other direction cause the gear to pop up????
