I have a chance to get a 71 40 horse Johnson ... this motor is said to run excellent, fresh water only, sounds great, but ...

is 100 and 105 pounds a decent amount of compression for these motors?

Also, is this an electric shift engine? My 71 125 is, and I cant stand the thought of having two of these lemons, lol. It looks remarkably like my 66 and 60 40 horse Johnsons, I hope it is somewhat the same internally

thanks for any input on this, its a 400 dollar investment, which is a bit for me at this point

:)

Castway 100 is about right if the engine is cold or dry as they say if there is a difference of at least 15 lbs between cyls. then there could be a problem. to get a true reading the engine should be warm. but if they are reading 100 i would say good to go. You could always decarb and might bring compresson up a little. my book doesn't,t show much difference in those two mtrs though. Keep us posted about results

CAR,

Those readings are fine.

I do not believe the 40 was electric shift. Easy to tell, is there a shift handle on the starboard side of the engine?

If so, it's not electric.

thanks for the heads up on the motor, I cant make out if there is a shifter on the engine, I tried to make it out but didnt have a lot of luck ... Ive just been hearing about motors with 145 pounds per cylinder and all of that, so I was a little leery of 100 and 105 ... although they certainly are within 10% of each other!

Got a notice that my manuals wont ship til july SEVENTH, damn that amazon, I got suckered by free shipping ... barnes and noble, never a problem, go figure, lol, ah that old saying, you get what you pay for!!

I figure Ill get the 71, mate it to the 66 when I get it running, and go with the 10 horse as an auxilliary in the mean time!

Thanks again guys

Couldn't find any electric shift in my parts books CR. Straight mechanical shift.
