I was out on the water tooling along when I lost all drive, the motor spun up higher.
I was towed to shore, when I got the boat out of the water I found that the lower end casing was broken around its mount bolts. All that was holding it on was the last forward bolt and unbroken portion of casing.
Any ideas on what the cause for the failure and is there some place to pick up a new lower end casing?
I am on a tight budget.

Your best bet would be on Ebay.....any 35 or 40 hp around that year should fit.

Look in the Yellow Pages for new/used marine engine parts. This will help you find an Outboard Boneyard. There will surely be lots of these casings around, since you don't really care about the gears, etc, and they were made for so many years. I'd be suprised if they wanted more than $15 for it...

When it broke, what happened with the big rear bolt? Did it snap around it???
