How hot is overheating?

Finally got the new T-stat in today and started it back up in the trash can. Same thing, checked the block temp with my buddys laser temp guage and it keeps getting hotter. I let it get up to 176 today before I shut it down. The motor runs excellent, the water pump is working really good...What else is there?...Isn't 176 too hot? I could have let it go but, started to get nervous. By the way this is an 87 evinrude 15......

I think that engine should operate between 140* and 180*f. Evinrude hi-temp switches are set to alarm at 200*f but I think that's to hot. I'd stay below 190*f. Is that 176* idling in neutral?

c/6

Hooty

Re: How hot is overheating?

Thanks for the reply hooty. No that temp was taken at about half throttle with an occational rev in the trash can. I didn't let it get any hotter because I got scared. I was told that if you can't put your finger on the block for 6 seconds its running too hot, at these temps I would get some nice blisters...lol...How hot should I let it get before getting worried? The nearest lake is 45 minutes away or I would just dump it in, and there is a 3 mile run from the launch ramp to the jetty if I go in the ocean. Don't want to break down there......

What part of the engine are you checking the temp on? Check the block between the flywheel and the cylinder head. It should be in the neighborhood of 140-160 degrees F. The cylinder head may run hotter than that.

Jimd is right, (of course), I don't know where I got 180* (senior moment, c.r.s.). My manual sez 123*-165*f (Thermomelt Stiks) operating range.

c/6

Hooty

Re: How hot is overheating?

I'm checking the temp on the port side of the block. That was the easiest place to hit it with the laser temp guage. Is this a bad place to check it? I'm not really sure where the spot is that everyones talking about. By the way the cover for the thermostat got up to 150 degrees.......

You say your water pump is working? but when was it last replaced? Just because its working (Pumping water) Or looks good doesnt mean that its working @ full pressure. Good Luck and happy 4th!

Re: How hot is overheating?

I have the Seloc manual and I can't find where it says to check the temp on the motor. Everyone tells me to check it between the fly wheel and the cylinder head. Thats on the side right? Also is there an easier way to tell for sure that its overheating without letting it seize up on me?????????

Get yourself a 163 degree thermo melt stick and touch check at several locations on and around heads covers after engine is up to temp.If it melts your engine is running hot.You can also buy an infra red thermo gun for around 80 skins.Dealer should have a thermo melt stick.
