I love "old smokey" but have always been troubled by this: it seems to run rough (like on a few cylinders) until mid-range rpms are first achieved, then a "boost" is felt and it runs fine. Ideas?

Also I burn about 10 gallons per hour at 4200rpm. Normal?

Thanks for any help!

I'm not an outboard expert, but it seems to me like a lot of the older motors run rough when idling/low end. I run a 1995 Johnson 225 and its the same way...rough until the RPM's start to get up there. It also burns a lot of gas, but 10GPH is a little high. You may have some old fuel in there, or maybe some water.

pcmlaw,What you describe sounds to me like your low speed fixed orifices or porting on one or more carbs may need cleaning.

Fuel consumption of 10 gallons at 3/4 throttle for one hour sounds acceptable for a 225.

Is your engine propped to turn in the upper range of it recommended WOT?If not, on low end ,it is being lugged and may also play a part in your performance issues.Should be capable of 5800 rpm.

sorry, ob is right, I didn't see that you were burning 10GPH at 4200.
