I Can't seem to be able to remove lower unit. I removed 6 lower unit bolts....and removed the 2 screws holding shift linkage behind small door on lower unit. Unlike my 35 Horse Evinrude....this 40 Horse does not have the one bolt that goes downward at the rear of the housing.

I'm pretty sure that there is an odd number of screws on that one.Either 9 or 7.Did you remove the bigger one at the rear end ?
Sometimes it helps to tap the lower unit with a WOODEN mall to break the seal.
good luck.

There are 7 bolts. 6 go up into the leg and 1 goes down into the lower unit. The one going down is in the back side. I bet you missed that one. Many people do not look for that one bolt on the top.

Well, I've looked at the entire lower end....there are only 6 bolts that come up from the bottom....none at the rear going downward. I'm puzzled. I did remove the sight window and released the two bolts holding the shift rod....guess I might find someone who's owned one like mine and see what they say. Thx guys.

Will...there is one...trust me...the first time I took mine apart I didn't see it at first either. It's a bolt about 3 inches long that comes down and screws into the lower unit.

When I said rear I meant the side the prop is on. Just above the exhaust outlet. Look about 3 inches above where it splits from intermediate housing. Should be there.

Well, This problem has been answered....and thx for all the support. My 1960 40 hp evinrude has an outer housing...thus is why I didn't see the last bolt. I have it apart now and am trying to get the parts together. Thx for being so smart on the issue....I know where to go if I need more help.
