Only starts when I open solenoid red switch

My 40HP 1992 VRO Johnson outboard is only starting when I open the fuel gate on the solenoid.<br /><br />Does this mean I need a new solenoid unit?<br /><br />Any advice appreciated.

When you initially try to start it do you pump the primer bulb until firm?When pushing the key in and out do you here the primer solenoid click?

Thanks for responding. I do pump the prime bulb til firm... I'll try to hear the solenoid click tomorrow when I push the key prime in.<br /><br />I'll follow up. Thanks again.

marshwhaler,If you find that it does not click or "energize" when key is pushed in ,you can try connecting an outside 12 volt source to the solenoid leads and see if the solenoid operates.If so,the problem will be in the wiring between the switch and the solenoid.Good luck.

Admiral,<br />Thanks very much for your help.<br /><br />There was a bad connection to the purple wire to the solenoid.<br /><br />Everything's working fine now.<br /><br />Thanks again.
