I have 2 fuel tanks and on occasion I run out of fuel at full speed. (140HP Evinrude 2 stroke premix). Is there a possibility of causing engine damage or is there enough residual oil in the motor to accommodate this situation.

Thanks
John

Re: Running out of fuel - engine damage

I have the same question but with a different motor, a 79 merc 140.

From what I have seen of other peoples post's, they don't recommend running the engine out of gas even at IDLE speed when they are storing their motor. The problem is if you have more than 1 carb, one of them will always run out of gas before the other. Since the oil is in the gas, those cylinders run for a little while without the proper amount of oil...

I am no expert, but my very old used motor ate piston number 2, one of the piston's fed by the top carb that run's out of gas first on my motor. (I have 2 carry on fuel tank's that sometimes run out.)

Stockyjr, I would try to avoid starving the motor for fuel mix, especially at WOT. Might be time to consider rigging a fuel gauge.

Re: Running out of fuel - engine damage

here is a thought at the end (1/2 inch up)of your fuel pickup line drill a 1/4 inch hole in the hose or tube this way when your engine starts to sputter you know you are getting low. you will not totally run it out of fuel because it will be sucking air and fuel. i feel this is better then just totally running it out of fuel. its just a though, might not be a good 1 ??
