Hello - this is my first post here and I readily admit I'm a real greenhorn to boats and motors, so please forgive me if this is one really dumb question.

Does anyone make some type of 'generic' (ha!) conversion, do-it-yourself kit for older type (10-30 year old) outboards?

I am handy enough to work on mechanical stuff if I have a manual...but.....if there is no such do-it-yourself conversion kit, is there any 'reasonable' outfit that does these types of conversions? I am in southern Oregon by the way.
Thank you for your help on this
old bob

PS....Do they even make a conversion for older 25 and 35 HP Johnsons?

Re: prop to jet conversion?

I believe they've been selling jet outboard coversions for a long time, and probably a jet version in that power class, BUT, BUT, BUT, there's a big but here,

By taking of the propeller driven lower unit and replacing it with a jet drive you'll lose a lot of power. They say 15% BUT, (here's the but thing) those motor don't have much power to give up and after a jet conversion it may seem like that "even at full throttle for a long time it still won't quite plane out" feeling.

Your local outboard dealer might be able to find you a jet drive.

Hi Bob
Outboard jets San Leandro Cal. I can't remember the new name of the company. They do make jets for all models as far as I know. You really need to do your home work on this before you spend money. First be sure you get enough hp for your application. I have seen quite a few 50s model 35hp OMCs fitted with pumps. They are usually mounted on small light boats. Kind of a poor mans jet sled type thing. My guess is this size motor barely gets the job done. I own a 40hp evin mounted on a 14ft sled, and it is only half enough power. Fuel economy does not exist. I don't have enough hp to carry enough gas to go any where.
