i had this motor out yesterday,(i just bought it
3 weeks ago,)problem is it runs great with the
cover off, when the covers on and your zipping along after about 20 seconds it dies, dead in the water..wait for a few seconds it starts back up
and does it again.if anyone has had one of these engines they know the carbs mounted on the side
and the fuel line is in a tight spot(kinked) with the cover on.last night i rerouted the fuel line
that should help(haven"t tried it yet in water)
the previous owner drilled holes in the cover
for more air.Is there a problem with air on these engines? or is there a gasket leak or something i should check ? topless is great but not for boat motors........any ideas would be great.thx

Hi, Dave.

One of the few problems that is common on that great li'l engine is exhaust leaks under the bonnet. Your symptoms are typical of an engine trying to run on exhaust fumes.

Check out the gaskets on the exhaust system.

Good luck. :)

jb is right. i have about 3-4 cowling covers where people have cut out a hole right over the carb so the engines can breath haha all the engines had bad exhaust gaskets (donuts).if you are looking for a good manual (factory) look on ebay i know i keep saying this to people but you cant beat a factory service manual just for that engine.i am a proud owner of 3 of these engine and i am very happy with them.

well i just found out the fuel pump was on upside down lol..so that takes care of my hoses being squeezed by the cover on the left side..
now another thing i found was the little spring thats on the carb linkages..its there but not doing anything(linkages are too loose)does anyone
know exactly where this spring attaches too?
and are there more than just the one spring//
getting this motor fixed up,a little bit here
and there.....thanks for all your help.dave
