I have a 1977 70 horse johnson. I cleaned out the carburators and went through the motor. Everything looks OK to me. ALthough I did find a bad coil that was only firing half way so that has been replaced. When I put muffs on it it runs great. If I put the motor in a barrel it also runs ok, although I only have the water up to the intake. When I put the boat in the water, the motor starts right up...idles fine, but when I put it in to gear it stops. I can start it right back up but it does the same thing once I put it in to gear. It seems like it something with the water pressure but I don't what would be causing this to even check it. Any Ideas?? Thanks!

Hi, Bonzo.

My guess is that you did the link 'n' synch and set the idle without a load on the engine. That needs to be done with the engine in a tank with a load on it or your idle will not tolerate a load. Stalling when put in gear is a classic symptom.

Good luck. :)

Hi check to see the timming is advacing with throttle movement. Its the linkage that goes under the fly wheel. Throttle is the bottom the timming is the top. if its full of dirt and gunk it won't move freely.
steve

All above is true but make sure the throttle is completely bottomed and when you shift, the timing must advance slightly before the throttle pick-up moves.

Re: HELP!!! Motor will not run in water

Just wnted to let all of you know that I got it fixed! I set the idle under pressure and checked out everything that you all suggested. It helped but it was still would stall out. I just bought the boat and apparently, after talking to the previous owner, it has sit for two years with about 4 gallons of gas in it. Anyway, I drained the gas tank and put some new gas in and it works great! That old gas was just gumming things up. Thanks again to all of you that helped!
