My 75 Johnson (Model 75elr76d/ Serial j4552021) has two major problems:

1. In water it won't stay running, at the ramp, unless I put it in gear & start (With hose attached in driveway starts/ runs OK after hitting the elec choke a few times), and of course this will be a major problem if/ when ramp is congested ... As this is my first outboard I do not want to be snookered taking it to a shop and not knowing what to ask or expect, any suggestions ??

2. Once out on water it sometimes "bogs" down, as in cruising along 3/4 throttle and it acts as though one has throttled back to 1/4. First time it happened I had been out running about 10-15 minutes, fellas told me it was the vent in tank not open good or bulb loosing pressure. Went out again, insured vent totally open - out for 1 hr when problem started again, pumping bulb no help as it was still rather tight, does not shut down but very slow back to ramp, occasionally motor picks back up, even though throttle not moved or anything ... Could the two problems be related ?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions/ insight !!

-cb

Re: 75 Johnson - ramp start/ bog problem

CB-

Welcome to iBoats!

Your first problem sounds like the low idle adjustment off. Both problems could also be electrical/electronic in nature - such as an intermittently bad coil or powerpack.

If you don't want to get taken by a shop, get a good manual and try adjusting the mixtures and check the condition of the carbs yourself first. It just might be something pretty simple.

Good luck! Let us know what you find out.
