Bought a new boat a few weeks ago with a 89 Johnson 175 HP on it. Runs like a champ. Love the thing. The other day the Tachometer just quit working while flying across the lake. Trying to figure out what went wrong. Fuse, wiring... ect. Called Johnson and they told me it needed a new rectifier regulator ($205). SOunds pretty easy to install. Before I shell out the bucks, I wanted to check and see with others whether or not there could be anything else I could check first? The grey wire? Fuses, Batteries?, wiring? Not sure where to start. Also, I can I run the boat until I get this fixed? I don't see the harm but I could be wrong. Thanks for the help.

Jason

It could be your rectifier. Easy to check. If the rectifier is bad, your battery will not recharge.

Is your volt meter reading greater than 12V with the engine running? If it is, your rectifier is OK.

Yes batteries recharge fine. Could it be because I did not charge them prior to going out last time? Can an engine run at a lower charge than the tachometer. The engine turns over very well and runs great.

JK

Without voltmeter (in dash or hand held) verification, we're only guessing.

Good point. I'm going to run out and get a volt meter. Hopefully bring some clarity to the situation. Could this be a potiential issue the the altenator?

Thanks for your help. I will keep you posted.

Jason

Get one with an ohm feature too. It may come in handy, down the road.

Please do not double post with the same question. Board space is at a premium.

Plus, if you double post, nobody has any idea what you have already done. I have deleted your new post and added it to this string.

Low bateries, fuse... before I buy a 200 part and rip the engine apart?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posts: 12 | Registered: Jul 2003 | IP: Logged

Engine should still run- just not charge. Would run off the battery until you deplete it/them. If your engine doesn't turn over- its probably your battery or a faulty connection to starter/ corroded or dirty cable connectors giving your not insufficient amps to crank engine. The tach thing is a correct indication of a faulty alt/rect but the usual symptom is INTERMITTANT tach reading -usually doesn't shut down all at once unless you blew it out completely by shorting out the system.
Single or dual battery system? Before you buy a
new part check out and clean your connections.
If your not getting a charge back to your battery once you get the engine goiug then I suspect a bad
alt/rec. A solar trickle charge battery charger
that works off your cig lighter is a good investment
