95 Johnson 140....good compression on all 4 cyl, but.....
On the top of a piston head. How much pitting is too much pitting...to the point that the piston must be rebuilt or replaced?

Examine the piston top. If there is too much pitting, replace it. If there is not too much, live with it.

Now think about it. How would you answer the question??

If compression is good (whatever the heck that is) don't worry about it.

Good luck. :)

Ditto JB.

Just be aware that the hardness of the piston is gone. The piston is now very weak compared to what its supposed to be.

Find out why it did that in the first place. Now is the time to figure it out, not after you rebuild it.

What spark plugs are you running?

Re: How Much is Too Much

thanks for the reply...compression is 120 on 3 of the 4 and 115 on the cyl that I can see a little pitting on the top of the piston head....Im running Champion Plugs spec gap for this engine.

Possible Causes ruled out: plugged carbs, advanced timming, looking at the power pack (possibly a bad diode.)
