Motor is an Evinrude 1977 electric start 35 hp. At least, it used to be. Turning the key now produces nothing but a clicking noise. No movement at the starter whatsoever. Checked battery, fully charged. Started at ignition switch, cleaned all contacts. Cleaned battery connections. Checked in gear prevent switch, checked out fine. The clicking is coming from a module located prior to the starter, looks like an electrical junction of some type. I have not put 12 volts directly on the starter yet, that's probably where I'll head next.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Yes put 12volts to the starter...also check the ground wire at the engine.

TMD

Hey, I appreciate your quick reply. I did clean the ground connection to the block, located behind the solenoid, clean as a whistle! I'll apply 12 volts to the starter as see what happens. BTW, can I do that w/ the starter installed? I've always done it (automobile starters) with the starter off and out, in a vise.

Thanks again.

Sounds like the "electrical junction" is the starter solinoid. It probably has given up the ghost on you. If when 12v is applied to the starter, she starts, throw your attention at the soliniod

Checked some schematics, the junction is indeed the solenoid. I'm in south Louisiana...late this afternoon, once the temps get out of the 90's, I'll go outside and apply battery voltage to the starter.

Thanks again for the advice, I'll post the results.

Applied 12 volts to the starter and it spins up well. But the gear doesn't shoot up into the position necessary to engage the flywheel. So, someone help me out here. I may actually have two problems. One, the solenoid may be hosed. And two, there may very well be an internal issue with the starter itself. Ugh. Any suggestions?

Ok, applied 12v to the starter directly. It spins great but the gear that grabs the flywheel isn't popping up. It looks like I have 2 problems, the starter and the solenoid. Any suggestions??

JHar....usually when the bendix dosen't engage the flywheel, either the battery ain't got enough "juice" or the bendix may need a drop or two of oil on the shaft.

Don't over lube the shaft. If ya' got some WD-40, spray some in the cap and apply several drops to the bendix shaft and work it back and forth.

Next, get a good battery and try it again. If the bendix shoots up and engages the starter, replace the solenoid, gather up yer poles and cooler (filled with your favorite libation) and go fishing.

Solenoid! Will pick one up tomorrow, but I'm fairly certain this is the culprit. Fishing sounds good right about now. That and the "libation"!
