Older Evinrude 35 HP motor misses

I have an older 35 HP Evinrude, I haven't checked the serial number for the exact year for sure but I think it is a 1980, at least that is what I was told from the previous owner. Anyway, the motor ran rough the first time out, I adjusted the idles speed tightened the plugs and also tightened the loose nuts on the carb.

It then ran good at higher speeds, but would quit at idle. Adjusted idle speed and it worked good for one trip, the next trip the motor started to miss at higher speeds in about five second intervals. Looked things over checked the gaps on the plugs checked all bolts, nothing looked wrong. Gas is same that it ran good on so don't think that is it but will get different gas just in case.

Now it misses really bad, getting into almost idle speed ranges. Plugs are fouling. Went and bought a small glass fuel filter, no change. Think it may be the timing since boat was ran with loose carb and loose plugs. Any help would be appreciated.

blindwillsee

Re: Older Evinrude 35 HP motor misses

Sorry it took me a while to repost. It is missing cold, and warm, doesn't matter. It is has been gradually getting worse, like I said it missed only at high speeds at first then moved to lower speeds as well, and now is missing almost at idle and with increased frequency, every other second. It also acts like cavitation at times because the motor will act like the prop is spinning really fast then it will run normal for a second or two then miss. I am suspecting either timing or there is a gear going bad since the frequency is increasing.

Re: Older Evinrude 35 HP motor misses

I think I have this figured out, but not the extent of the problem. I took the boat back out today and noticed that the boat wouldn't surge and miss at idle speeds, but would make a clicking sound at higher speeds and act like cavitation. So I adjusted the forward\Reverse cable so that the arm was in the proper position for both. Put the motor in reverse to see if it would do it then, and it did. Put it forward and it did it still, then neutral and revved the motor didn't surge or miss. When I put it back in reverse it got stuck in reverse, but now there was no surging or missing even when the motor was revved up.

So I think it is the arm that adjusts the clutch assembly. The plastic armature that is by the top of motor and gear teeth is over worn and needs to be replaced. Not sure if the lower gear in lower unit is bad yet. Would anyone know how much this upper assembly may cost and if the lower unit clutch assembly or gear is bad about how much that would be for parts? Thanks

blindwillsee
