I have a 1990 150hp evenrude just picked up a new VRO2 pump my old pump has a three wire harness tan, gray and black. New pump has a four-wire harness tan, gray, black and purple. Was told this is the only replacement that is available now is this true?? Second my manual only covers a three wire hock up showing black = ground, tan = to warning horn and gray to the terminal block strip for the rectifier, parts guy is ordering a new four wire harness and he says the purple wire goes to the terminal block strip purple connection, which in my manual looks like another power feed and that the purple wire is a extra warning for no oil which I though was covered by the tan?
My questions
Is the four-wire pump the only one available as he says??
What is the purple wire sensing and warning for.
In addition, were does the purple wire connect to.
Thanks Guys for any information.

Re: Wiring harness VRO2 pump

Bluefish.... The three (3) wire warning system has been obsolete for many years. The flaw with the three wire system was that it could (and did often) give off a false warning signal which of course would ruin a family outing.

The four (4) wire warning system (VRO) has been on the market for a long time and has been superceeded many times to perfection. It's main purpose was/is to eliminate the false warning problem. It should have came with instructions and a small wiring harness with a four pin plug attached.

The forth (4th) wire (purple wire) will be attached to the purple wire at the engine wiring terminal.

Joe
Thanks for the reply I agree with you, you would think the new 4 wire plug and instructions would come all together, I am concerned that he is ordering a harness I am thinking that this is not the right replacement for my engine. If new harness does not have instructions with it, I think I will return it and try a different supply house. I still cannot see how that purple wire is going to work on the diagram I have. I have the 9amp charging system the numbers on the new pump box are 13-C-1C 5004558 if you have any more info that would be great either way thank you for the reply
Bob

Re: Wiring harness VRO2 pump

If you will look on stb side of engine you will see a termial strip. The purple lead at the strip is a switched lead from main switch to regulator. The purple wire from the 4 wire VRO pump will connect to this termial board, regulator and pump now connect togeather, and both switched from main switch. The harness you buy will do this or you make the one purple wire and connect it. You can also see this in 1994 wiring diagram for V4/6 which has the 4 wire pump.

Re: Wiring harness VRO2 pump

Clanton
Unfortunately I have only a diagram for a 1990 engine and this shows the gray wire running back and going thru a kill switch and changing to purple that powers the warning horn and connects to the A terminal of the switch the A terminal on the switch is feed from the purple wire from terminal block on engine. So if I hook up new purple wire to terminal block purple I will be double feeding power to new pump? Is their a site I can go to for the wiring diagram your talking about? Or on your diagram were is gray wire going to?
Thanks for any more info
Bob

The new pumps are all the same but the kits are tailored for whatever motors they update. For your 150, the kit number should be 5004559 and that includes the 4 wire harness and instructions.

It looks like you received the wrong kit.

Re: Wiring harness VRO2 pump

I only have an OMC manual for that engine. The gray lead begins at the regulator for a tach signal, moves farward in engine harness, pickups gray lead from VRO, moves to OMC sidemount tach connector and stops. Then from control connector to tach. The gray lead is not a switched lead. Power comes from gray lead and purple lead to pump. The extry purple wire, like Joe said, helps stop false alarms. You can call me if you like, 239 842 0294, before 1200 EST.
