prop slipping?

I have a 1966 80hp Evinrude with electric shift. I was out yesterday and the boat was running fine. When I began to return home the motor sounded as if it was reving up and I was going nowhere. I stopped and put it into neutral and then shifted into forward gear. The boat began to move so I gave it more gas. When the rpm's picked up the boat sounded as if the prop was out of the water. Again I slowed down and the boat went forward again.

I would appreciate any ideas on what to look for.

Re: prop slipping?

if this is the shear pin type you could have sheared the pin, or the bushing on the prop gave out. i have had this happen to me a few times with my 68 sea king 40hp

Sounds to me like you may have run over a bit of water weeds or something and had it hanging over the front of the gearcase. Sometimes that's all it takes to cavitate the prop just as you get going. Takes a moment of backing and turning to dislodge it and shake it off.

Re: prop slipping?

I checked the prop for seaweed and had none. How do I check the bushing on the prop? Also, does the new prop have to be pressed on, or is this something I can do on my own?

1970 Glasspar G-3
1966 80hp Evinrude

1960 Glasspar G-3

Re: prop slipping?

I just had the exact what you dicribed, it was the prop had spun. Mark the inside of the prop between the prop housing and the inner spline collar of the hub with a good waterproof marker or just scribe it with a punch. Then water test it. If the marks don't line up...like mine did'nt you have a spun prop. You can have a new hub pressed into the prop at a prop repair shop. Cost varies.

Mr. Joe Reeves just posted this. It'll Help ya out.

Joe Reeves
OMC Guru
Member # 6826

posted August 04, 2003 08:32 AM
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For what it's worth.....

A slipping hub (faulty prop) can be checked on the engine by inserting a 2x4 between the prop and the cavitation plate to block the prop from turning. Have the engine in gear. Attach a breaker bar with the proper socket to the flywheel nut and turn it in the normal (clockwise) direction.

If the propshaft turns within the prop, the hub is obviously slipping.

--------------------

c/6

Hooty
