I have a V6 200hp Evinrude that takes forever to cold start at the dock. sometimes i have to remove the plugs an wipe them off then replace them then it fires right away. It smokes alot initially and clears out. Once it gets going however and warms up, it runs fine. I have had a new vro unit installed and a "black box ? " the seloc manual gives me no clu as to what to do.

Welcome to the board!

What spark plugs are you using? Please dont say "the right ones"!

Describe your starting proceedure. This is what works for us;
1- Prime the system by pumping the bulb.
2- Turn the key to the "On" position only, do not engage the starter.
3- push the key in to activate the primer and count o eight.
4- engage the starter

You may have to tap the primer as it warms up. Naturally the throttle should be advanced slightly.

Good luck!

Yes, as long as you hold it in it will put fuel in the motor until the line pressure drops.

I would use Champion (Q)L77JC4 in that motor. What are you using now? Also use FRESH 87 octane and good oil.

plugs are correct (ql77jc4) i must admit the last oil i bought was a wallmart brand that specified it was the correct oil for the evenrude. it looked a little thin but was the right color.

post script--i had a offshore boater advise me to remove the thermostats and leave them out , he says it will not do any harm but will run cooler...my heat index now is 127 150 f at warm up.

i haven't removed the thermostats yet, looked at them and can't tell if they are working or not..

If you remove them you may need to rejet the idle circuit to get it to idle right. If it were mine Id leave them in. Ive tried it both ways and that style motor always behaved better with them in.

Good luck!
