I have a 1989 60HP Johnson outboard. I am tossing around the idea of rebuilding the powerhead myself. I can get a rebuild kit for half the price of a rebuilt powerhead. Has anyone rebuilt one before? What is the best manual for the job?

OMC original manual- after-market isn't very clear for first timers.... :)

Re: Powerhead rebuild

Dhadley,
It needs to be rebuilt because 2 out of 3 cylinders are scored and it runs bad after it heats up. I have had 2 different dealerships look at it and give me quotes of $4000.00 to repair it. Do you have any suggestions on what I can do to it to make it last a little longer? I just don't feel like spending that kind of money on a 1989 motor.

Is that it??? 2 cylinders scored? Let me guess -- #2 is the worst and #1 is scored also but somewhat less.

4K seems a bit much if the block is boreable and the crank and rods are still good.

Re: Powerhead rebuild

4k is more than a "bit" much.......it's 4 TIMES the value of the eng!!!!
lmc1973, are you a capable mechanic??? If so, you can do this on your own with the exception of the block, as far as boring goes. If you were to do this yourself, I see 800.00 being a reasonable range. any dealer that tells you 4k, is trying to sell you an engine. Yours might be worth 1200.00 if running & in good condition, but with the price of newer outboards, you can't replace what you've got. There is new/demo engines listed for 3500-4000.00!!!!!!!

Imc: It looks like those dealerships are going to buy a rebuilt powerhead from iboats.com and then try to charge you double for it. Iboats ~ $1700 + s/h for rebuilt. For what they ( dealerships ) want you could upgrade in years quite easily.

Count your Blessings
Not your troubles

Re: Powerhead rebuild

We typicaly would rebuild that powerhead, including re-dressing the powerhead, for less than 1/2 that.

There are many threads about that model motor running lean in the mid range. I would almost bet you were on a nice easy cruise and it started to lock up. To avoid a repeat performance we would suggest to richen up the mid range.

As always we would further suggest to do all the updates to it as well. Very simple, no big deal.

If we can help just let me know -- dhadley50@aol.com

Good luck!

Pop over to "General Outboard" and look at hookinfinger's thread. Clanton has the updates listed.

Good luck!
