I have a 1984 Evinrude 70 h.p. with no spark at any of the plugs. I checked for wiring/ign grounding /every thing was o.k. The charge coils had the correct ohms. according to the manual but the sensor coils have no ohm reading at all. I pulled the flywheel expecting to see melted coils but everything "looked" fine. Will probably let someone else doublecheck to make sure they are bad My question is this...Can you buy just the sensor coils? Ive been to parts websites and all that is listed is stators, and they never match the number that I read from my coil(581949) Does anyone know a good place to buy parts? Are aftermarket parts o.k.???

Re: no reading on sensor coils

The sensor coils cannot be purchased seperately. The timer base comes as an assembly only.

Part number 581949 superceeds up to the following numbers... 583060 - 583378 (newest number in my book).

Have the ohm meter set to its highest scale when you're checking the sensor readings as the reading is usually quite low.

Disconnect the RED plug at the engine and check again for spark before purchasing parts. If you now have spark, replace the ignition swich.

Re: no reading on sensor coils

Joe, Its my busy season, so Im just getting back to this project. My charge coil and sensor coil are two separate parts . the sensor coil sits on a plastic retainer ring (which looks like the bottom melted) I took just the sensor coil to a dealer. He said friction may have melted it...but even if the motor ran hot, it would not run hot enough to melt the ring. Anyway, he gave me a price of $186.00 for just the sensor coil. (didt get the part #) Said he needed it on the motor to check it, and of course that means a long wait and lots of $$$$$. Isnt there a sure way to test this? Dont know if I should trust the Clymers manual. It says "put the ohmmeter on the low scale and put test leads on A and D, then B and D, then C and D , in that order. Meter should read 9-21 ohms." No matter which scale I use, Im showing an open circuit!!! and why should it make any difference which order you test the connector? Iknow my meter works. An 8 ohm speaker showed 8 ohms. help!

Re: no reading on sensor coils

I have exactly the same thing happening with my motor an "87" 70 horse evinrude. I am just waiting for the part to come in. The Seloc manual gave me the same test and this one failed too, some I am guessing the test is accurate. Wish I would have done that prior to replacing the power pack like everyone told me to do. Would have saved me some $$.

Re: no reading on sensor coils

Scott, Thanks for the imput. Let me know if a new sensor coil solves your problem. All the dealers here call it a stator and are charging $187.00 but no one stocks them. If I could just put my meter on a new one then I could safely condemn this one. Even thought about a used one since everyone says they hardly ever go out.
What to do????????

You test the timer on the engne, check for open, short to ground, and output voltage. Termial D is the common. The plastic retainer ring melted from overheat, maby.

Thanks Clanton, I agree, after studying the ring it had to be from overheating. ....another problem to tackle. The motor is too small for this boat(rated for a 110, I think} Could that overheat the motor? First I need to get the boat running. Well back to the book.

Re: no reading on sensor coils

The actual part you need is a timer base assembly. It houses the senor coil and is one piece and has to be replaced as a unit. It fired right up after I installed it. Just for grins and giggles I plugged the multi-tester into the new part and it did read resistance where the book said it should. Pricey is all I can say, about $185.

Make sure that you pull the part off of the motor and get the part numbers. I had the same problem with every dealer that I called, they wanted to sell me a stator instead of the timer base. Too costly to mess with.

Re: no reading on sensor coils

Thank you Joe Reeves, Clanton, and Scott. Im trying to find a good price on a timer base. Scott, it always helps when someone else has the same problem. Your info really helped me to condemn this charge coil !!!If Im lucky that will be the only bad part. Ill post the outcome.

:)
