no-float-boat,Check the model number again.I can't find a 35545.As for the chugging and poor engine response I would start with a compression test.Look for compression numbers near 100 and within 10% on all cylinders.

What horsepower? Model number doesn't check out -- early 60's 40 hp?

Offhand, you might clean and regap the plugs, then change out the gas (fresh gas with the right mix of TCW-3 oil -- depends on the model year.) You may have too rich an oil mix, or the choke might not be disengaging.

Re: old Evinrude smokes and chugs

Im sorry guys, the number is 35515 50098. the hood says 35hp Lark. im using a 50 to 1 oil mix. 480ml(oil) in 21L(gas). oil is motomaster Formula 1 premium 2-cycle outboard oil TC-W3. plugs are new, compression is good. i will check again and post numbers. Should i try a lower oil mix? 75-1 or 100-1? Also where should she pee? i cant see any water spitting out.

thank you

Re: old Evinrude smokes and chugs

24:1 to 32:1 -- That's four to five ounces of oil for each gallon of gas. Water is exhausted from the port on the rear of the leg, about halfway down. It will spray a lot of water if the pump is working right (Water and exhaust also exits underwater from the port under the ventilation plate.) If you don't have water coming out from the back of the leg, you need to pull off the lower unit and check the impeller (might as well replace it even if it looks OK). In addition, check for obstructions in the leg. Exhaust backing up will give you the conditions you describe, and the back pressure will not permit the motor to run well (if at all). You may have a mouse nest in the leg -- no kidding; been there, done that.

This may be a stupid question,i know, so please forgive me. :D Are you thoroughly mixing the oil in the tank? If oil is not put in first or not mixed it will settle on the bottom of the tank, just waiting for the pick-up tube.
Also, would someone please explain to me why older outboards require a richer mixture than 50:1? Thanks for the info....

Re: old Evinrude smokes and chugs

Reel Appeal,Many of the older outboard engines did not incorporate open design low friction needle bearings on the internals. For this reason a richer oil mix was factory recommended in those days to assure enough in the atomized mix to enable enough lubricant to migrate between the friction surfaces of their babbit type bearings.Whether a person who owns one of these engines decides to use a leaner mix to attain less smoking or a bit more combustion performance is a decission that I personally will not recommend and leave it to the individual to decide. In some cases one may be able to get away with it and in some cases perhaps not.

Try e-bay for the manual. Last time I checked there was a guy selling reproductions of most of the original Envinrude shop manuals from the 60's and 70's for around $10.

iboats has em, so does amazon, barnes and noble, just do a search for em, youll find tons of em

on the oil situation, one of the gurus on here says that the reason the old motors are still around is cause of the heavy oil mix ... more lube, less wear, makes sense to me, Im going to run my 50 - 1 motor at 32 to 1, cant hurt and should help it in the long run

Re: old Evinrude smokes and chugs

No need to run your later engine 32:1 instead of 50:1.Your engines open bearing design allows for ample lubrication at 50:1.Over oiling will lead to premature carboning.
