Tachometer Question 30HP Johnson

I have a 1990 Johnson 30 Hp tiller (sn J30RESB) converted to a long shaft, rope start. It is my understanding that in order to put a regular tach ( not a TINY TACH ) I need electric start. I am confused as to what electric start has to do with a tach . Could someone please explain this to me.

johnnie,<br /><br />My understanding is that elec. start kit had an alternator too. The alt. is the tach. signal.

Am I then correct in assuming that if I would change the flywheel and install an alternator I would be able to add a tach? Could the alternator then charge my trolling motor battery?
