Just bought boat two months ago.Took out on water in wide open throttle, boat only went 10mph. Took home found out I only had fire on 2 plugs, replaced power pack. Took back to lake same result. Took to mechanic he cleaned carbs adjusted synchrozation, compression at 125 lbs. Plently of good blue spark. Cleaned fuel pump. Could it be that my stator is not working? How do I test the stator? My 2 left plugs are fowling with oil and gas.

Rob

Rob,
I just went through some similar work on my '93 Johnson 88 spl - fouling plug (#1) and lower top end/intermittant power. Did pack, coils, plugs, plug wires, timing, cleaned carbs and still had my problem. That is until a poster suggested checking/cleaning/changing a small brass fitting called a check valve or fuel recirculating valve ($13) - it looks like a zerk or grease fitting located underneath the carbs on the manifold. There are four of them with tubing coming off and going back to the cylinders . You can unscrew them and check them by spraying carb cleaner into the screened side . If the valve is working you can only spray in one direction - when not functioning two directions so replace the bad one (I had one bad one - going to the #1 cyl , imagine that) . It made all the difference for my engine and many months of frustration and trying to figure out what was wrong.
