My 60 hp evinrude would not turn over, testing the solenoid I grouned the safety swith lead and she turned over like a charm....anyone know about these switches? can i replace it? Can i just ground the lead out and hope for the best?....The wire is good, it has continuity to the safety switch, but it just won't tell the engine to turn...any ideas....

Tommy

When you say "the engine won't turn over" do you mean the starter won't spin or the engine won't start?

c/6

Hooty

Re: Replace Safety Switch Evinrude

Are you refering to the neutral safety switch in the control box or the safety switch behind the throttle arm?

The engine will not turn..as in....turn key...and here nada nilch zero....the safety switch as labeled by my manual is right under the flywheel this engine will start in any gear as long as the throttle is down to the start position...I have started this engine in gear many many times. The throttle is down but the saftey switch will not function properly and ground out.

Re: Replace Safety Switch Evinrude

Tommy,
I'll take a stab at this one. The safety switch should be a N.O. (normally open) circuit until you put the motor in neutral. The switch is then closed and will complete the solenoid voltage to ground and the motor should start. If the motor is not in neutral, the safety switch goes back 'open' and breaks the solenoid voltage, the motor will not spin. You can replace the safety switch, and it's a good idea. Having the throttle wide open and bumping the ignition key could start your motor and you'd go flying off into the sunset, with you overboard, if you jump it out of the circuit. Bypassing this switch is not a good idea. Look to see if you have an adjustable screw that, when adjusted, pushes down on the plunger of the switch. Perhaps it's needs a bit more travel to engage the switch. Check the ground connection of the switch too. If it's not making a good ground connection, the solenoid won't close when you turn the key to the start position.
