Scoring on Cylinder Walls

I am replacing the deflectors on one of my 1987 OMC 1.6L V4's. I notice some scoring on the cylinder walls of number 1 cylinder from the 6 oclock to 9 oclock position. The engine ran great last time out and the compression is good and within the 10%. I have also recently decarbed the motor and no heavy carbon build-up with the heads off.

I am not looking for problems and do not want to seem a worry wart but can't help but wonder. Your thoughts??

Dang solittle....never like to see scoring of any kind. Can only lead to worse problems.

How bad is the scoring?

Don't know here buddy. If it was me, I'd fix it before it causes worse grief.

You can take the by-pass cover off and get a partial look at the piston and ring. That may help decide what to do, if anything.

c/6

Hooty

Poster said 6-9. That cover will only show what can be seen with the head removed. 6-9 is on the exhaust side.

"Carbon" is likely to blaim.

TMD

Re: Scoring on Cylinder Walls

I don't have the compression numbers at hand but readings were taken recently and were in the 105-115 range. I haven't been inside all that many motors so it is hard to rate or compare the scoring - I can see them clearly and feel them with my finger nail. I would say moderate. Also I don't have any clue if they are new or have been that way for years. I am inclined to keep runnin it and monitor compression fairly frequently and decarbon say every six months - if it lasts that long.

What I intend to do is look for a cheap, rebuildable motor and rebuild it myself as a spare in case this one heads south.

You're absolutely right TMD. I was "looking" at nr. 2cyl. Another senior moment.

c/6

Hooty

If I found a cyl with 105 with my guage at work...its rebuild time.

TMD

Solittle....I'm incline to agree with TMD. You will be running the risk of really doing some non-rebuildable damage to the engine. And it can happen really quick to. Just my opinion here.
