mezman,

THe most common area for water intrusion is the fill and drain plug seals. Replace those first (they're cheap) and see if it still leaks.

If so, you should have it pressure tested.
can a do it your selfer and how do you perform a pressure test? any special tools ?
also the fin just above the prop has a weep hole on the bottom of it oily water drips out of it after running for a couple of minutes
mezman,

The oily residue is probably just exhaust residue.

You can make a pressure tester out of a tire pump, if you want. The trick is to get a fitting that will go into your fill or drain plug holes.

If you have never changed the fill/drain plug seals, I would do that first.
mezman,

If it is black or brown, it is exhaust residue. It will be oily. Remember, you are burning oil in the gas.

If it's white (milky) it may be lower unit oil, but I doubt it.
mezman , The only way that you would have lower unit oil weeping from a cavity drain above the anti-ventilation plate is if your lower unit was intruded with water to the point of overfill level of where the driveshaft intersects the housing. In any case ,whether it is lower unit oil or residual two cycle oil ,there may be a problem present.Frequent or excessive weeping of two cycle residue from the exhaust cavity area is indicative of a failed seal on the upper or lower end of the exhaust boot.Is there any indication of lower unit oil behind the prop in the area of the propshaft seal?
its oil, very thick infact thicker than the gear oil thats getting water also while we are here is 25/1 the proper gas oil mix and what type of gear oil should be used I was using 80w90 gearoil to flush with just bought this thing for $40 so not much experience whith outboards
Replace the seals on the drain and vent screws and give her a run after filling with clean lower unit lube. After running for an hour or so,inspect the lower unit oil by removing the lower drain plug and seeing if water is present.

Your outboards original mix ratio was 24:1 ,so you should be fine at 25:1 mix. Some guys run those engines at 32:1 with no deleterious effects.I recommend that you get the gear lube from a dealer but Wal -Mart sells some too.Lubrimatic brand is fine but not the Hi-Vis type.Just regular outboard lower unit lube.
