I recently purchased a boat with a 1989 Johnson 4hp motor (Model BJ4RCEC). It will not run.

I can squirt in some starter fluid and it will run for a few seconds, and I checked to see that the fuel pump is working, so my assumption is that the carburator is the problem.

Would everyone agree that it's the carburator or could I be overlooking something?

If it is the carb, how complicated is a rebuild? I'm not a mechanic, but I think that I can take the carb apart and put it back together.

Are there any good instructions on what types of defects to look for when rebuilding the carb, and what should be replaced?

Thanks!

The correct kit will have all of the necessary replaceable components to include bowl float and needle valves along with any fixed orifices.look for gummy deposits in any of the fixed orifices or porting.Very common problem on two cycle engines that have set out of use.

Don't use starting fluid on a two stroke outboard. It will damage the engine.50:1 mix in a sprayer is the prefered method of manual injestion for testing purposes.

Assuming that you are getting fuel to the carb it is almost surely the carb.

Make sure that your primer bulb is working and getting the float bowl full of fuel mix. . .no water.

Do not use starter fluid unless it is specifically made for 2 stroke outboards. Use fuel mix and a spray bottle.

Good luck. :)
