warm starting evinrude problem

I have an "87" 70 horse Evinrude that starts great when it has set overnight or longer or if I try within 30 minutes after running it. Anything over that I have to turn the little red knob on the primer/choke manually prime it. I have tried to use the primer at the key switch and when it is warm it seems to do nothing.

To this point the gas line bulb stays firm, the fuel pump is new this year, there is also a new power pack and timer base(spark issues).

I am stumped

Anyone have any ideas?

does your primer solenoid even work, test the solenoid on the motor, purple/white wire, makes sure it works, then id check continuity from ther engine to keyswitch, and then test the keyswitch,

do you have a serv manual, it will cover keyswitch test, if not you should invest in one,

good luck and keep us posted

Re: warm starting evinrude problem

Hey guys thanks for the replies..

marinegrh, the primer seems to work fine when it is totally cold, just doesn't seem to do anything when warm. I have the seloc manual for the motor, I just haven't ran any tests on the primer/choke. I don't understand why it doesn't do anything when it is partially warm, and these works sometimes and not others problems really suck to figure out.

Middleground, I don't disagree with your statements. The only problem is that to use the manual choke on this motor, the cowl needs to be removed, and in rough water I don't care to be hanging over the back end of the boat:), not a very secure position to say the least.

jtc1945,
This has been a carry over from last year and I don't think the temp has that much effect on the problem.

You say 'the primer seems to work fine when it's totally cold, just doesn't seem to do anything when warm'.
Does the primer solenoid click when you hit the priming switch when it's warm or not? Is there voltage to it?

c/6

Hooty

Re: warm starting evinrude problem

I haven't had the boat out for a while, had other projects to do. I am hoping to get out for a while this weekend and will check to see if it clicks while it is warm.

Well, I took the time and pulled off the cowl and had my fishing partner click the key and when it was warm it didn't hear the solenoid click.

Hummm.
Would it be possible for you to run the engine on muffs, get it warm and see if you've got voltage to the primer solenoid? That's the only way I can think of to trace the problem down. If you don't have voltage there, go to the back side of the switch and see if the problem is in the switch itself. Lettus know what ya find.

c/6
Hooty
