Hi, I'm new here and pretty new to working on boat engines so bear with me...

I got a 67 18hp evinrude fastwin at a yard sale. The story was that it had hardly been used, spent last many years in storage, and it looks to be true by appearance. Supposedly it was "worked over" at a shop last year, taken out once and stored again. I got it home and put it in a barrel of water, hooked it up to fuel and to my surprise it started right up. It will run smooth only at the higher end and only if the choke is at about 50-75%. I can't ever get it to accept less or no choke. At lower throttle it will run smooooooooth then POP, smoooooth POP, and follow this pattern a few times until it looses enough power to die. Again, I'm new here and at these engines, but can do a little work myself if I know where to start. Can't afford a professional fix... Thanks to anyone who takes the time to read and reply.

Sounds like you might be running lean, probably due to a dirty carb. Get a manual and start with a carburetor rebuild. A base-line compression check is a good idea too.

Edit: Don't forget to replace the impeller in the water pump before you run it again. No telling how old it is and they tend to break down over time. Also change the oil in the lower unit, check the manual for the correct type.

Thanks Tim,

I have a manual on the way. Do you think a carb cleaning will do or do you advise a new kit? I will replace the impeller as you suggest..

Might want to simply back the low-speed needle valve out a 1/4 turn to rid yourself of the popping. I'd do that before tearing into the carb.

- Scott

The carb may be badly varnished from being stored for several years with gas in the fuel bowl, I doubt that anything short of a tear-down will do the job. It is not hard at all and the kit is pretty cheap at less than $20us, so I would go for the complete rebuild. Make sure you remove and clean all the jets and the needle valves and seats. Since you are probably running lean, that is most likely where your main problem is found.

Whatever you do, don't continue to run it in a lean condition since that is a quick way to damage your pistons and heads.

edit:

Or try what Chinewalker suggested. Just don't keep running it lean.
