Just bought used 90 115hp Johnson and had Johnson
service facility replace fuel pump, plugs, all fuel related hoses, cleaned gas tank out, new flywheel, new internal wiring harness, new water pump, new carb kits. Engine has same prob it had when I took it to the shop. Have to manually advance throttle to keep it running at idle.
Backfired and caught on fire first time I tried to start after getting out of shop. In addition,
it will run just fine for a while at 5500 and the next time I start it up it will only run about 2300 at full throttle..Stop it and restart and it may run at 5500 or it may run again only at 2300.
Would appriciate any and all suggestions..Thanks
BTW This is my first posting to the list..New member..Frank
P.S. VRO disconnected and am mixing oil and gas 50:1

Hey Frank,
Welcome to iboats. What's goin' on in Beasley today besides your engine catchin' fire?
Somebody may have a different take on this then I do but the only thang I can think of that would make that engine backfire is either a defective sensor coil or powerpack. I think I'd probably start with the replacing the powerpack. Lettus know.

c/6
Hooty

Frank, ya' might wanna' also check the torque on the flywheel. In fact, I'f pull the darn thing and make sure it ain't broke the key and spun. Does it still backfire?

Make sure the coil wires are going to the right plug also.

Just curious, what caught fire?

With all that you had done at the "Johnson service facility" I think I would take it right back & tell em to fix it right and you don't expect another bill.

You might have some crud in the carbs. That might account for the 5500 - 2300 rpm thing.

did anyone happen to test the compression? the first sign of loss of compression is usually it wont idle. its been my experience if it will idle ok odds are compression is ok. first step to take in a two stroke is always compression, spark, fuel.
post us again and tell us some compression numbers

Thanks for replies Hooty, OBJ, Solittle, and Rodbolt!

Compression was fine before I brought motor to svc dealer..All 4 withing 10%. Have not done recheck but will do ASAP.

Svc center told me to bring her back in..After $2k
tune up/repair I should not have to do that huh?
<G>

They replaced all fuel lines from tank to carbs and installed new carb kits.I dumped all gas and cleaned tank before I brought motor to them with fresh gas/oil in the tank. They installed a new fuel pump and bulb as well

They installed new flywheel as teeth were rounded on old one. 5500 to 2300 back and for the speed was problem before and after they worked on motor
so all that they did had no effect on that prob.
Pumping the bulb in the fuel line made no diff in running at 5500 or 2300.

Must be unrelated to any work they did..Motor only backfired once during maiden check out voyage <G> and that was when she caught fire under the cover and in the water around the lover unit..No wet gas found when I got the fire out and pulled the hood.

I did not ask them to replace the sensors or power packs but would thought they would have tested them at the end of their repair work
They do test motors at end of their work in some type of tank while still on the boat.

The not idleing right I think might just be a case of needing to be set a little higher can I can keep here running if I pull the hood and advance the idle with my fingers til she warms up

I will welcome any other ideas and suggestions.

Sorry this post is so long but wanted to acknowledge each of your list of questions.

All have a nice weekend..Great day to go fishing weather wise but not til I get motor working
right.

BTY..Tip for other boaters?
I grabbed a two year old fire extinguisher when she caught fire only to find it showing full on the guage, feeling to be the correct weight of a full unit only to find it had ZERO go juice in it which made it nothing more than a boat anchor when I really needed it..Guess I will just buy a new one each spring..That was quite disarming at that moment in time.

Thanks

Frank in Texas

When you say - - "Must be unrelated to any work they did.." - - Are you serious?? - - If your problems ain't related to what they did they sure as hell are related to what they didn't do but should have. The fix should be THEIRS and at no cost to you. ------------------ In my opinion of course.
