Re: Boston Whaler quality declining?
I have had 7 Boston Whalers, but none newer than 1982. All were superbly built and detailed and dang near indestructible.

My son's 2000 Montauk was not as well detailed, but the wood anchors for screws, etc in the hull had been replaced by a phenolic product called Whaleboard that was excellent and got rid of the "problem" with screw hole rot out after 15 or 20 years.

I preferred the older classic models for the yacht-like brightwork, detail and finish and for workmanship.

I don't care for the design of the current models or for the quality of fittings, seats, etc.

How many used small (11-25') boat brands do you know of that go for more than they cost new 20-30 years ago?

Bottom line? No. I don't think the quality of current models matches the well earned reputation of the classics.

I do believe that a 20-25 year old Whaler is a better boat than can be bought new at any price.
