I have got a real head scratcher. I have a 1971 evinrude 115hp that will not crank. I started with no spark and replaced power pack. Now I have spark on all four cylinders but not at the same time. There is a warm up lever on control box and when lifted 3/4 up I have fire on only #1 and #3 cylinders and no fire on the other 2.
But when you move lever down towards run position i get weak fire on all four at about 1/2 way up on lever and with lever down in run position I get fire on #2 and #4 but none on the other side. I have pulled flywheel to check gap at timer base and inspected stator and timer ok.
Resistance checks ok on all componets and i replaced two cracked coils but it wont crank. It will hit and try to run for a second but thats it. Any ideas?

Clean up all your battery cable connections, clean all coil grounds and give it another try.

Re: 115 evinrude wont crank

Well i reloaded my guns and went to work on it again. I checked and cleaned all connections but no change so i did a little reading on this site a came across a similar problem that delt with plugs and their gap. Mine were set at.040 so i reset them to .030 and it actually crank up and ran for about 10 seconds then cut out and died. So what does this mean?

Are your spark plugs wet? <---this will tell you if it is spark related.

TMD

Re: 115 evinrude wont crank

Put some premix fuel in a squirt bottle and squirt some into the carbs next time it fires. If it runs troubleshoot the fuel system.

Re: 115 evinrude wont crank

all spark plugs are wet and it seems to be flooding i dont beleive there is enough spark to burn all fuel. when it does crank it will run poorly for a few seconds(dead hole/holes) then it sounds as if the other cylinders are trying to kick in but it just pumps out a lot of smoke and dies could my problem be the spark plugs?
thanks for all your advice this thing has been drivin me nuts

i will have to try to bottle feed it to see if it makes a difference but i think im getting plenty of fuel(extremely wet plugs)

Re: 115 evinrude wont crank

You mentioned spark plugs in your last post but didn't say if you had replaced 'um, so do that. Install the factory recommended Champion plugs gapped at .030" and give it a try.

c/6
Hooty

Re: 115 evinrude wont crank

just replaced plugs and it cranked up and ran for about a minute then same as before died out my #2 and #4 plugs are not firing at all when it run but i get weak fire with them out am i looking at buying another power pack or do i need to look more towards the stator/timer base
the #1 and #3 plugs are firing fine. If i switch brown leads from stator should the oppistite plugs fire? i have tried to switch sensor leads but they are not long enough.

Re: 115 evinrude wont crank

I guess my question is this. What does the warm up lever have to do with the firing of the plugs?
I come from a back ground in electronics and automive ignition systems and in my experience it shouldnt matter where the timer base is located, it should still fire the plugs just not (on-time)but i lose fire between the banks as the timer base is rotated. This is the problem i need to solve. Thanks again for your help!

Re: 115 evinrude wont crank

Im trying not bore or bother you nice folk but now i have another problem. I have a fluke 87 dmm and it is supposed to have min/max and peak capture modes and when i try to test out put of stator and/or timer base it shuts my meter off while cranking the motor over. Whats up with that?

Do you have the meter set on AC or DC?

c/6
Hooty

Re: 115 evinrude wont crank

Sounds like the stator is dying on one side...or the powerpack is failing...swap the stator leads around...see if the other side starts to fire.

TMD

Re: 115 evinrude wont crank

ok here we go i tried it on dc across brown/brownyellow and it shut of meter so i put common lead to groud and measured each brown wire. I got -178v on one leg and -288v on the other leg then i retested and got the same -178v on leg and -38v on the other. same results after a few tries. i tried to reverse leads to get a + result and it shut off my meter. I am not sure that this meter can accurately measure the peak voltage as it can only sample at 100ms.

Re: 115 evinrude wont crank

one more post

after switching stator leads it cranked and idle
and will continue to idle but now #1 and #3 are dead but it stays running. Will not accelerate
but it does finally purr a little. Am I in need of a new stator?
Thanks a lot you guys for putting up with me
