I have a 1961 75 h/p johnson. I put a new impeller on it and fired it off and it lets the left bank get to hot at idle. I blew out and flushed the water passage way or at least I attempted to.
Changed the stat. My question do I need to pull head on that side to ck for blockage.
I dropped lower unit again and made sure pickup tub was in place. Any suggestions will be appreciated. I do have manuel.

Re: overheat problem

Bubbakat.....having a brain cramp so I can't remember if on the old V4's if each head has it's own t-stat. The housing (I think) is right below the exhaust cover. Take a look.

I would be more specific but being sunday, herself won't let me go to the shop.... :D :D

Re: overheat problem

jim this old iron horse i am fixing is it possible

that I need to completely put the lower unit under water to pick up enough water to cool this thing.
The water intake where you put the muffs is hard to fix where th water will enter there with muffs

Re: overheat problem

Yea bubbakat,,,,if the pick up is on the "trim tab" thing hanging down over the prop, dump her in a garbage can full of water and try it. Make sure the water level is over the mating line of the lower unit and midsection. These pumps won't draft water, they gotta be in it.
